More than 5,000 people came along to Government House gardens on Sunday January 25, 2004 to see Western Australia’s spectacular Oz Concert. The event attracted a worldwide audience when it was telecast live on Access 31 and on the Internet by Highway 1. SBS TV will present an edited version on Sunday February 15 at 10.30am..
The theme for Oz Concert 2004 was All True Blue: A Walk on Common Ground and the concert featured more than 200 talented performers who presented a musical showcase highlighting the rich heritage of Australia’s indigenous cultures and the values and traditions of the many cultures that contribute to Australia’s unique and vibrant society.
Performers included indigenous group Deep Water Blue with Lee West on didgeridoo, Youth Link Vocalists Louisa Dawkins, Lucy Durack, Melissa Erpen and John O’Hara, Kavanagh Academy Irish Dancers, WA African Drumming Association, East Fire Indian Contemporary Dance Group and bush poet Rusty Christensen.
Highlights included a collaborative performance with dancers from Canada’s
world-renowned Tryzub Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and Western Australia’s Roztiazhka Cossack Dance Group and an innovative dance piece with performers from all groups blending traditional rhythms from diverse cultures into an exciting contemporary fusion that is Australia today. Danielle Rock choreographed the fusion to an original musical score by talented young composer Kingsley Reeve.
Oz Concert was introduced in 1989 to foster and promote unity, harmony and respect and honour and recognise the origin, place and contribution of all Australians.
